For those asking "what is condyloma?" be prepared to be disgusted by the answer. Condyloma is a fancy term for genital warts, which are found on the genitals and around the anus. They can also be formed inside the upper vaginal area as well as on cervical tissue. Feel free to read on for more information on condyloma.
Appearance The warts themselves are small, pinkish in color and cauliflower shaped. When the warts form, they are usually raised just above the skin tissue. Even though the surrounding skin may look normal, the virus actually settles in the cells around the wart.
Symptoms In many cases, those who are unfortunate enough to contract condyloma do not do not realize there is anything wrong. Other than the small warts, oftentimes there are no other symptoms. However, in other instances, there may be sensibility, itching and even mild burning. Some may feel pain or discomfort during intercourse, while others may feel the urge to urinate. Additionally, the time between infection and the appearance of the warts is unclear. Symptoms can appear after a couple of weeks or several years.
Causes The human papilloma virus (HPV) is what causes condyloma. In turn, HPV is a type of sexually transmitted disease. Using condoms is not a reliable way of preventing HPV since the virus is found on the skin.
Diagnosis Typically when diagnosing condyloma, a medical care practitioner will inspect the genital area. Oftentimes the medial personnel may want to do a biopsy on the wart and send it off to the lab for further tests. Furthermore, when examining women, medical personnel may wish to use a colposcope to search the cervix for outbreaks.
Treatment There are several types of treatment for condyloma; however, one has not proven to be more effective than another. There are certain chemicals that doctors may use. The most common is trichloroacetic acid (TCA). TCA is a clear liquid that is brushed onto the warts, causing a burning sensation as it dries. Once applied, the warts will turn white, shrink, and after several weekly treatments, eventually disappear. Once successfully removed, there are no guarantees that the warts will not return.
