If you were recently part of a relationship that has come to an abrupt end, you may be wondering what to do after a break up. Many people do not handle break ups well, which causes them to either bounce back and forth between that person, fall into a depression, or find rebound relationships. After a break up you will want to take some time to yourself to evaluate your current situation and where you will go from here.

  1. After a break up, you need to take some time to evaluate the relationship that just ended. Did it end mutually? Were you the one that caused the relationship to end? Think about why the relationship ended and what could have been done differently. It is important to learn from your past relationship mistakes to ensure you have a more successful relationship next time and to learn what you are looking for in a partner.
  2. When you are trying to figure out what to do after a break up, it is important to make sure you have found closure in the relationship. Do not leave issues in the relationship or with that person unresolved because it can lead to regret later in life. After the break up has ended and some time has passed to cool the tension, have a discussion with your ex to say whatever has been left unsaid, even if that only means saying good-bye.
  3. After a break up, you may need professional help if the break up was especially devastating. After you have been in a relationship for quite some time with someone that you expected to have a future with, the ending of that relationship can be tough. Seeking professional help from a therapist can allow you to move past the depression that may have been caused from the relationship ending. A therapist will work with you to solve any unresolved issues as well.

After a break up, do not find a rebound relationship. A rebound relationship will only hurt you and the rebound in the long run. Issues will be left unresolved and chances are the rebound will not be the type of person you are looking for. In most cases, people choose rebounds to make the ex jealous and for other reasons other than a long term, committed relationship. After a break up, take some time to yourself before you begin dating again.
