What To Do For Dog Bites
If you own or work with dogs then one thing you need to know is what to do for dog bites. A dogs bite can be very painful, even if it's just a small one. This article will show you the steps you need to take if you are ever bitten by a dog.
- Seek medical attention. Most dog bites can be treated easily and effectively at home. However, if you were bit by a stray dog or if the wound is bleeding uncontrollably or showing signs of infection like swelling, redness or pus, then you will need to go to the doctor. If the bite is deep then stitches may be required. If an infection sets in then you may be prescribed antibiotics. Be sure to report the dog bite to the animal control office if you did not know the dog that bit you.
- Stop the bleeding. If the bit is minor and can be treated at home then the first thing you need to do for the dog bite is to stop the bleeding. Apply a clean towel on top of the injured area. A cold, wet towel may soothe the area. A little pressure may be needed until the bleeding has clotted enough to stop. Keep the wound elevated.
- Wash the bite. Use an antibacterial soap and water to thoroughly clean the dog bite.
- Bandage the area. Once the area has stopped bleeding and has been washed, apply a clean, sterile bandage. You can also apply a bit of antibiotic ointment to the area everyday to prevent infection.
