While it is disputed that slalom skiers need to have superior aerobic capabilities, it is important that the core of the skier’s body is in top shape to be able to handle the force applied during slalom skiing. With that said, here’s how to train for slalom skiing.
- In order to be a good slalom skier, they need to be a great skier. The skier needs to make sure they have enough experience and technique to be able to navigate the demands of the slalom. From there, physical conditioning plays a big factor in training.
- The core needs to be strengthened through weight lifting. It’s important to build strength in the hips, back, hamstrings and thighs as slalom skiers endure many turns and need to have a strong lower base to keep them from losing control. Doing weight exercises such as squats and hamstring curls can prepare the body for the demands of slalom skiing. Instead of building bulk, where the lifts are low rep high weight, the slalom skier needs to focus on high rep low weight exercises. This builds the strength and endurance needed to for slalom skiing.
- In addition to building a strong core, the slalom skier needs to do trial runs on a frequent basis. This allows the skier to build endurance and strength overtime, and allows them to adjust anything techniques. Getting in several runs a day is ideal, it allows the slalom skier a chance to build the endurance and confidence needed to run the course well.
