If you want to know what to expect from sex after prostate cancer surgery, then you can stop here. Prostate cancer surgery is a major surgery because of all the changes that can happen after the procedure is over. In this article, the sexual effects of prostate surgery will be explained, and how to deal with them.

After prostate cancer surgery, erectile function may be gone for a period of three months to a year. Some men will have the ability to have an erection immediately after the procedure, but this is very rare. Some men, unfortunately, are never again able to have an erection. Keep in mind that just because you may be able to have an erection in the months following surgery, this does not mean that the erection is strong enough for sexual intercourse. Typically it takes one to two years to sustain an erection strong enough for sexual encounters again. This time frame may be longer depending on age, any existing diseases such as diabetes, and the type of procedure that was performed.

Ejaculation will never occur again after prostate surgery. This does not mean that men cannot orgasm, but the orgasm will be "dry". This should be expected from sex after prostate cancer surgery. Most men will still be able to  have an orgasm through stimulation after prostate surgery, even if they can't have an erection.

Many medications and devices can be used for impotence after healing.  Some medications, such as Viagra, and penile pumps can be used after prostate surgery to help attain an erection. Talk to your doctor and your partner about which medications or devices will be best for you.
