If you are applying for graduate school, you may be asking, "What is the GRE?" The GRE is the Graduate Record Examination and is recognized worldwide as the standard for comparing those who are seeking a post-graduate education. Taking the GRE is one of the first steps in applying for graduate school as your score will be required as part of the application process.

The purpose of the GRE is to gauge a person’s readiness for graduate level courses. The GRE is a general test not focused on any particular area of study. The areas that are tested include analytical writing, verbal reasoning and quantitative reasoning. The skills being tested in the GRE are problem solving, critical thinking and writing and reading comprehension.

If you are nervous about taking the GRE, it might help to know that over a half million people, from hundreds of countries, will be taking the exam every year. Because of this, there are many courses, books and online programs that can help you to get ready for the GRE. Preparation for the GRE includes the type of questions that will be on the exam, knowing how the exam is scored, taking pretests so that you know which areas to study.

Applying for graduate school can be scary, but if you get a high score on the GRE, it will definitely help your application. To strengthen your chances of getting a good score, talk to anyone you know who has taken the exam, form a study group and don’t leave studying until the last minute.
