Need to know if you have what it takes to be a successful graduate student? A lot of work goes into being a successful graduate student, and not everyone can easily do it. However, with enough dedication and a few guidelines to go by, you should be well equipped for the challenge.

  1. Stay organized. In order to be successful in graduate school, it is extremely important to keep your affairs in order. Assignments, readings, project due dates, presentations and everything else that will be required of you each semester needs to be recorded and kept in one place. Whether you use a physical planner or organization software to keep all of your obligations where you can see them, you need to make sure that you stay organized throughout your graduate school career or you will begin to lose control.
  2. Don't take on too much. To be a successful graduate student, you have to be committed to being a graduate student. Depending on your general energy level and ability to complete your work, this may mean cutting certain activities out of your life. It's not typically advisable to work and attend graduate school at the same time, as this can greatly affect your performance and spread you too thin. However, sometimes there is just no way around working and attending school at the same time. If you must work while in graduate school, try to work as seldom as possible, and when you do have the time for your studies, try to get ahead so that you won't be too pressed for time.
  3. Never procrastinate. We are all guilty of procrastinating from time to time in our school careers. Graduate school is structured very differently from K-12 and undergraduate school, though, and there is no room for procrastination. As a graduate student you will often be left to your own devices and are expected to keep up without so much as a single reminder. If you have other obligations and simply don't have time to work, that is one thing. But if you make a habit of not doing your work when you do have time, you will not be a successful graduate student. Never, ever procrastinate.
