What is MESA? The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) is a research medical study. It is composed of six universities that investigate why and how the arteries harden. Atherosclerosis happens when particles cause the blood to stop flowing in the arteries. This condition can cause blood diseases, strokes, and heart disease. Continue reading to learn more about the MESA medical study.
MESA is supported by several medical organizations and medical facilities. The National Institute of Health is one of the primary sponsors of the MESA research study. Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore and Columbia University, New York are two of the six universities that conduct the MESA study. In the United States, the six universities perform studies on 6,000 men and women, in six communities on patients from all ethnic backgrounds.
A typical MESA study is done to gain more knowledge about diseases that occur in the arteries. Medical researchers and doctors try to find ways to fight and kill diseases that occur in blood vessels. Performing the MESA study is one of the many methods that are used to find and develop new medicines and better treatment plans for doctors to help patients recover from atherosclerosis.
The MESA study does have certain requirements for participants in the study. If your community is selected, the age range will most likely be 45 to 84 years of age for you to be selected for the study. The process could take two years and 1,100 persons will be accepted from your community. When and if you are selected, MESA will ask you questions about your lifestyle and health. An examination and test of your arteries and your heart is a very common procedure.
MESA is beneficial to participants because the services are done at no cost to you. These medical tests can and may prove to be a valuable source of information about the health of your arteries and blood vessels. An atherosclerosis test may save your life. You are offered reimbursements for the cost of transportation and all test information is kept private. Finally, the MESA study is only done for research and it is against the law for your name to be used in any way.
