What Is Porn

What is porn? Well porn is what you make it. Seriously though. The definition of porn is " creative activity (writing or pictures or films etc.) of no literary or artistic value other than to stimulate sexual desire" according to the good folks at Princeton. But, that definition kind of takes the fun out of porn doesn't it. Porn is an American subculture, and to define it in such static terms is rather, well, narrow minded. So, what is porn?

Sure, porn is for sexually stimulating purposes. Every guy reading this piece right now has seen, used, or has in some way been exposed to things that are pornographic in nature. Those that say they haven't, are lying. But, like many things in this world, porn can be a million things to a million different people.

If you go by the definition that the good folks at Princeton put forth about porn, then porn is anything that causes sexual stimulation. As you all know however, sexual stimulation is one of the most relative events an individual can go through. Think about it. The stuff that turns you on may not effect the next guy in the slightest. Some dudes are into fat girl porn. Others dig on girl on girl. Even still, others may be into Japanese Hentai as their source of sexual stimulation. Everybody is slightly different, which means that porn is in the eyes of the beholder.

Seriously, there are people out there that get turned on by the sight of a nice foot in a sexy pair of pumps. Should this be considered porn? Well, according to the folks at Princeton it does.  

The more traditional perception of porn are the millions upon millions of tapes, DVDs and websites dedicated to showing people in their most natural state, getting down with one another (except for the specialty porn of course). There aren't billions upon billions of people on this planet because humans aren't having sex...So, porn is exactly that. Porn is nothing and it can be everything.

Oh and let's not forget about the comedic value of some porn. Yes, comedic value. The story lines to some porn scenes are simply ludicrous. Oh the pizza man shows up and the cute half naked lady has no money to pay... If getting sex was really that easy, there would be a lot more pizza boys running around.

Of course, the negative and downright evil aspects of human social interaction also make an appearance in porn as well. Just like in the real world, women are degraded. Just like in the real world, children are exploited. Porn is a microcosm of a bigger, flawed human existence. Negative and positive.
