Because of its growing popularity and funny-sounding name, many people are asking themselves, “What is Skype and how does it work?” Developed by a company based in Luxembourg, Skype is the software application that has enabled users to make voice calls over the internet since 2003. You may be thinking, “How can I use Skype to make calls online?” if you are not familiar with the service. Technically speaking, Skype is a proprietary software codec that allows you to connect to another computer running Skype. Basically, Skype is a software program that you download. Once you have it installed on your computer, you can use the software to call other Skype users for free. Calls placed to conventional landline telephones and cellular telephones can be made for a minimal fee using a debit-based user account system.

Skype’s stated purpose is to break down barriers to communication and with approximately 124 million connected users per month. In the second quarter of 2010, the company seems to be doing just that. As more and more people begin to use the service, they ask the question, “What is Skype and how does it work?” You will need a computer, internet access and a webcam in order to take full advantage of Skype’s benefits. You will be able to access helpful information to assist with the user interface. Once you get the hang of navigating the system, you will be able to initiate and receive voice calls, video calls, SMS messages, instant messages and files. If you have more than one person you want to stay in touch with, Skype offers the option of video conferencing.

Skype is not just for the individual user who wants to stay connected to friends and family. Teachers across the world are making use of the Skype in the classroom-dedicated teacher network to interact with other classrooms worldwide, feature guest speakers without requiring them to travel and take classes virtual field trips. Even law enforcement is getting in on the game with the Palm Bay Police Department using Skype to obtain warrants to draw blood from suspects in DUI cases faster. Now that you understand what Skype is and how it works, you are prepared to stay connected.
