Perhaps you've been wondering what is Social Security number fraud? Social Security number fraud is usually associated with the crime of identity theft where someone generates or steals a valid Social Security number from another person and sells it to someone else.

Social Security number fraud is usually committed by stealing another person's Social Security number from their wallets or purses and if possible, the mail. Unsecured websites on the internet are also vessels where people's information becomes stolen. This can also happen from paperwork at the workplace or at home. Some criminals go into other people's trash to commit Social Security number fraud from companies or personal residences for those who do not destroy their records accordingly. Phony sales representatives contact people through the phone or e-mails try to con them to send their Social Security number to individuals who will, in turn, use their private information for illegal profit.

There are ways to avoid Social Security number fraud in order to protect your identity from predators who will sell or use the information for criminal endeavors and leave the victim holding the bag. The Social Security number card should be kept in a secure place unless you absolutely need it for a new job or when filing your taxes with the appropriate accounting agent or firm. This will help you to avoid fraud. A person must never carry their Social Security number card or any documentation with it in their wallet or person in case of theft or loss. If a person suspects being a victim of Social Security number fraud, he should report to the proper authorities such as the Internal Revenue Service and the Federal Trade Commission as soon as possible..
