What is a tortuous heart? A tortuous heart, also known as a tortuous aorta, occurs when the aorta is distorted in shape, size, or path. This condition can cause complications in certain patients, while others may not experience any health difficulties as a result of the the distorted aorta. Those who are suffering from a tortuous heart are at a very high risk of high blood pressure due to the fact that the normal blood flow is severely interrupted.
As mentioned earlier, many patients will not experience any symptoms or complications from a tortuous aorta. Those who do, however, usually experience shortness of breath, blockages in blood flow, slight muscle fatigue, and tiredness. Symptoms can range in severity from patient to patient, and may sometimes be so severe that medical attention is necessary.
While a tortuous heart can go unnoticed in many individuals, it can cause cardiovascular complications in others with the condition. As a result from the interruption of blood flow caused by a torturous aorta, the blood pressure can become very high. Those with a tortuous heart are also at a higher risk for Atherosclerosis. In general, this condition can cause an individual to have blood circulation problems within the body, and may also lead to esophageal discomfort in many patients.
To diagnose a tortuous heart, your doctor will need to examine the heart and the blood vessels through various different tests. The condition may not be severe enough to require immediate treatment, but in some, a tortuous heart can be serious. If the condition is so severe that immediate treatment is needed, your doctor may recommend surgery to the aorta. If you do not experience any symptoms of the tortuous aorta, it is likely that the condition is not serious enough for medical treatment.
