By keeping a few simple guidelines in mind, you can learn what to wear to a fall wedding in New York. For best results, be sure to speak to the parents of the bride or groom in order to make sure your attire is appropriate.

  1. Read the invitation carefully. This is the most important way to determine what exactly should be worn to the fall wedding. Both the appearance of the invitation as well as the words in the invitation themselves will give you a clue about what attire is expected. In some cases, the invitation may even instruct you to wear "cocktail attire, formal wear or white tie."
  2. Speak to one of the hosts or hostesses a few days before the fall wedding about your choices. Run your clothing plans by them. Make sure they agree that what you plan to wear is appropriate for the party.
  3. Men who have been instructed to follow "cocktail attire" should choose a nice suit with leather loafers. For "formal wear" parties, dress in a tuxedo with dressier leather shoes. Finally, if the fall wedding you are attending requires you to wear "white tie," men are typically instructed to wear white vests, ties and tail suits with white leather shoes.
  4. Make sure that your clothes are cleaned and pressed before the fall wedding. It doesn't matter what type of clothes you choose for the wedding if they are wrinkled. In addition, have any necessary alternations done before the fall wedding in New York. You don't want to be tripping over your clothes during the wedding.
