What To Wear At An Interview
Knowing what to wear at an interview can give you a head start at sealing the deal and getting the job. Landing an interview means they are interested in you so doing well on the interview is crucial to getting hired. Avoid making any mistakes or losing your chance at an opportunity by dressing appropriately.
-
Impress them in a suit. A suit is the best thing to wear at an interview. Just be sure to keep the suit a solid and conservative color, preferably a dark gray or navy. Black is also acceptable but some consider black suits as very formal so if possible wear another dark suit rather than black. The suit should be of good quality fabric such as wool and you should make sure the suit is well pressed and not wrinkled. Pair your suit with clean black dress shoes and black socks.
-
Keep the shirt and tie simple. Now that you have your suit ready, you need to choose the proper shirt and tie to go with it. The only proper shirt to wear at an interview is a long-sleeved, button-up, collared shirt. The shirt should be white or another light and neutral color and solid colored shirts are best. Polo shirts and short sleeved collared shirts should never be worn at an interview. When selecting a tie to wear with your suit, it is a good idea to choose a tie of good quality like silk and one that is either solid or with a simple pattern. Avoid ties that are overly colorful or have big and extreme prints to wear at an interview.
-
Don’t forget the details. When you are dressing up to prepare for what to wear at an interview, don’t forget the other details. You need to wear a belt with your suit and the belt should be black or a dark solid color in leather or another material that is similar in appearance. Avoid belts with large and bulky hardware that may be easily visible under your suit. If you have a nice watch that is conservative, you can wear it to the interview. Make sure the watch looks professional and is not a sports watch or brightly colored. Remove any earrings or facial jewelry if you have piercings. A simple tie clip or pin is also acceptable for wearing at an interview.
- Show up well groomed. Comb and style your hair to make it look neat. If you have facial hair, wash it and comb with your fingers to keep it well groomed. If you do not usually have facial hair, make sure you shave before leaving the house. Colognes and scented after shave should be used sparingly when wearing it at an interview. Some people have a sensitive sense of smell and may be allergic to the scent so apply very little or if possible, avoid using cologne and scented after shave. Keep your nails neatly trimmed to a short length and make sure they are clean. You will be shaking your interviewers’ hand and the last thing you want to do is make a bad impression with dirty, long fingernails.
