What To Wear To A Wedding: Black Tie Optional
Figuring out what to wear to a wedding that is black tie optional is much simpler than it may seem. Many people have trouble deciding what to wear to a black tie optional wedding because there are generally significant rules. Only the groom and best man are supposed to wear tuxedos, only the bride wears white, if it’s before five you wear something semi-formal. There are a lot of rules to follow, but with rules come exceptions. The key thing to remember is that when the wedding is black tie optional, you can dress with a lot more freedom. Incorporate your own personal style and you will have a great look for any black tie optional wedding.
- Try a button-down shirt and blazer. Button-down shirts are casual, but they also have a crisp, clean look. Pair a solid-colored button-down with a solid color blazer. They can be different colors as long as they complement each other.
- If it’s okay for church, it’s okay for the wedding. Church attire is acceptable because most people dress up for church, typically wearing a suit. Consider a nice suit and a dressier shirt underneath to add a little formal flair when you attend a black tie optional wedding.
- Black tie optional does not mean come dressed however you want. You are being given the option of wearing a tie, not jeans and a T-shirt. The temptation to dress down may arise; if so, wear a nice pair of slacks and a nice silk shirt.
- Pant selection is important. Slacks and dress pants are the only acceptable pants. Khakis, jeans and shorts are off-limits.
- Keep the shoes simple. You can’t go wrong with a simple pair of dress shoes that complement the outfit you choose for the wedding.
- Remember, it’s not your day. All eyes should be on the bride and groom, not you. Avoid wearing anything overly flashy. Your silver and gold sequined vest will get better use at another event anyway.
