Who Was The First President Of The United States?

Who was the first President of the United States? George Washington became President in 1789. But, before he was sworn in as the very first President, he was a general, revolutionist and politician. Here is a history lesson for those not familiar with Washington’s life.

Birthplace The first President lived and grew up in Virginia. He was taught to be a gentleman and follow the rules set up by society at the time. At the age of 16, Washington served as a land surveyor.

Military In 1754, the George Washington became a lieutenant colonel in the military. During this time period, he fought in the beginning of what became the French and Indian War. He later moved up the ranks and served with General Edward Braddock in 1755. The future President barely escaped death when he was shot at by the enemy. However, two of the horses he rode during the attacks died beneath him.

Politician He later returned home and spent time managing his property and home in Mount Vernon. He also became a member of the House of Burgesses and married Martha Dandridge Custis. Unhappy about the way the British government treated the people, Washington’s fight against British rule began. His disagreed with how the British ran the country.

Commander in Chief When the population decided to fight British rule, the man who was the first President joined the Second Continental Congress. He was nominated by the Virginia colony to represent them. Soon after, he took control of an army and fought a six-year long battle in Massachusetts.

Road to President Washington used various strategies to beat the British. He successfully conquered Cornwallis in 1781. In 1787, he helped draft the Constitution and became President of the United States. As the leader of the free world, he helped bring the people together under one government.

Death The President of the United States died in 1799 of throat cancer. He fought the British, led armies and then a country. He was one of the founding fathers of the Constitution of the United States. His picture is on the quarter and his birthday is celebrated in February.
