Wind Energy Pros And Cons
Interested in what wind energy pros and cons are? Wind energy is hailed as being one of of the most environment friendly sources of energy available. However, like all sources of power, wind energy also has a unique set of pros and cons to consider.
- Wind energy has virtually no pollution or waste byproduct. Wind energy may be one of the cleanest energy sources currently available. There is no pollution or waste generated during the operation process. Unlike other energy sources, wind energy does not contaminate or ruin the land around it. Many of the parts and mechanisms in the actual windmills are even made with recycled materials.
- Wind energy is cost effective. When contemplating the pros and cons of any energy source, cost is always an issue. Because of the equipment needed, wind energy requires a considerable initial capital outlay to get it going. While it certainly isn't cheap, when considering the other forms of renewable energy, wind energy is certainly the most cost effective.
- Wind energy may evoke the “not in my backyard” mentality. While wind energy is widely accepted as clean and environment friendly, certain individuals may oppose to having a number of massive wind turbines in their neighborhood. Some may appreciate the sleek look of modern wind turbines but others could find them unappealing and may even oppose to having these in the area.
- Wind energy contributes to avian deaths. Birds sometimes do fly into the blades and end up injuring or killing themselves. Incidences are higher in areas where there is a large avian population or areas of high migration. Newer turbines rotate much slower than earlier models though and poses less of a threat to wildlife.
- Wind energy equipment can be damaged by extreme weather. Storms and high winds can severely damage or destroy wind turbines. After bad weather, a thorough checkup of wind turbines is a must. Because of the high costs, repairing or replacing wind turbines can be quite expensive.
