The books that are flying off shelves and into the hot little hands of women everywhere are three tomes about a BDSM-centered sexual and lovingly emotional relationship between a 21-year-old college grad, Anastasia Steele, and a 27-year-old billionaire, Christian Grey. Brit author EL James’ trilogy, Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed (released in the US this week), is changing the way women think about men, love and sex. In other words, it’s your shortcut to the erotic thoughts flying through your woman’s head. Because most likely, those thoughts are all about Fifty.
How hot is it? With millions of copies in print, the books are selling at roughly one per second in the USA. Universal and Focus Features just picked up the film rights for a whopping $5 million. The phenomenon has boosted traffic to sex shops, which are selling out of grey ties like the one on the cover of the first book (the first “device” Christian uses to bind Ana’s wrists). The Pleasure Chest is even organizing “Fifty Shades of Pleasure” workshops at its LA, Chicago and NYC locations. And James, fresh off inclusion in the Time 100, is doing 20/20 tomorrow night.
Your jaw might drop over what your lady is reading (and loving)—then you’ll probably want try it out that night.
I read all three books in less than a week. I loved them, and I was moved by them in more ways than one, if you get my drift. Now I’m convinced that all our lives would be better if men were reading them, too. Here are six reasons you should check it out. Now.
1. You’ll learn what your woman secretly wishes you’d do to her
Women get hot over Christian’s moves but may be embarrassed to ask their partner to do some of the acts in the books, thinking they’re too freaky. Your jaw might drop over what your lady is reading (and loving)—then you’ll probably want try it out that night. It’ll totally shift your perspective on her and what she’s actually up for.
2. You can pick up a few tricks from Christian
Mr. Grey can probably teach you some new moves for the bedroom, or plane, or boathouse, or anywhere you can possibly get frisky. Beyond the sex, though, Christian’s character brings back a sense of chivalry that some women miss in their relationships, says Bo Blaze, an alternative life coach who is working on his own spinoff, Fifty Shades of Black and Blue. “If you read about Anastasia and Christian’s relationship outside of the bedroom, he treats her like a princess,” Blaze explains.
3. You might discover some fantasies of your own
Communication is key in the bedroom, and these books are sure to get you two talking. Pick out a scene from the book you’d most like to try, or get her to tell you her favorite part, then surprise her by acting it out when she least expects it. You may have thought rough or kinky behaviors would turn her off, but as long as you keep things consensual and safe, you’ll be headed toward some steamy fun.
Trust us, she ain’t reading Danielle Steele.
