So Jaguar Land Rover might have won the 2017 New York International Auto Show’s Car of the Year award for their Jaguar F-Pace, but all eyes were on the new Range Rover Velar.

Not that the new Jag SUV isn’t worthy of all the accolades. Because it is. It’s just that if you’ve ever dreamed of owning a Range Rover but found it a bit over your budget, the Velar (which starts at $50K) gives you a better shot at the dream—and appears a much comfier option than squeezing into that Evoque to join the club.

But… is the Velar a “real” Range Rover? Well, given that you can’t really answer that until you’ve actually driven one, I’ll hold off on encouraging anybody in the market for a luxury SUV to pre-order a Velar.

But after checking it out at the show, I will say it’s pretty striking from a design perspective. As a matter of fact, you could argue that the mid-size SUV, which is Range Rover’s first in the segment, looks better than the top-of-the-line Range Rover, which has a base price of roughly $85K.

Now, you’ll probably wind up getting banned for life from every celebrity party in LA if you posted a comment like that on Twitter. But hey, you’re driving an SUV: Aren’t you better off heading to the mountains anyway?
