If you’re into tripping your balls off, or if you did back in the day, there’s good news for you. Magic mushrooms are apparently the safest recreational drug out there. Wait, isn’t that an oxymoron?
According to a 2017 Global Drug Survey, the safest intoxicants for you to put into your body for a buzz are ‘shrooms. The GDS used data from just under 120,000 people who reported their drug use and whether they sought medical treatment. Of the 12,000 who took mushrooms, only 0.2 percent reported seeking medical treatment. That’s the lowest figure of all drugs measured, including alcohol, which had the third-highest medical treatment rate with 1.3 percent, and weed, which was second-lowest with 0.6 percent.
The two highest figures were for methamphetamine and synthetic cannabis, with 4.8 percent and 3.2 percent, respectively. LSD, another hallucinogen, had the third-lowest rate with 1.0 percent.
Of course, that doesn’t mean magic mushrooms are 100 percent safe to digest, they are “drugs” after all. “Combined use with alcohol and use within risky or unfamiliar settings increase the risks of harm—most commonly accidental injury, panic and short-lived confusion, disorientation, and fears of losing one’s mind,” Adam Winstock, an addiction psychiatrist and founder of the GDS, told The Guardian.
So if you’re trying to trip and ‘shrooms are your D.O.C, you should research the appropriate dosage for your experience level, make sure you’re in a safe and comfortable environment, a good mental state, and perhaps in the company of a sober friend who can watch over you, just in case. Also, make sure you have a strong stomach because those bad boys allegedly taste like crap. Allegedly.
