A four-year-old pup, Teddy, is being hailed a “miracle dog” after he woke his owner up from a coma.
Andy Szasz adopted the shnauser-poodle mix from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) just a few months before being diagnosed with bowel cancer, and he credits his survival thus far to his friendship with Teddy.
“I always tell people I rescued Ted and Ted rescued me,” Szasz said in a statement. “We certainly do have a special bond.”
Of course, Szasz’s wife, Estelle, thought to bring Teddy to the Intensive Care Unit when he came down with a bad case of pneumonia in December and doctors had to put him in a medically induced coma for treatment. While Teddy only came to say hello to his sleeping owner, after just one bark, Szasz woke up. He was supposed to be in a coma for three more days.
Because of his miracle work, Teddy has since been honored with a special distinction by the UK’s RSPCA, taking home this year’s Animal Award. No one can deny that a dog really is a man’s best friend.
