Is our government prepared to save us all if we’re ever under a nuclear attack? Not really, but if shit goes down, you may want to head to Colorado ASAP—with friends in high places or a suitcase full of bribery cash.
There you’ll find a bunker built inside a hollowed-out mountain, the Cheyenne Mountain Complex, one of many secret shelters where 7,000 Americans will go to hide out in the case of a devastating nuclear annihilation.
Garrett Graff, the author of the new book Raven Rock: The U.S. Government’s Secret Plan to Save Itself While the Rest of Us Die, spoke to Inside Edition about preparations for Armageddon.
“The government built more than a hundred of these bunkers and relocation facilities around the country,” he says.
There is also a bunker located 60 miles west of Washington D.C. called Mount Weather and a one beneath a West Virginia luxury resort called Green Brier.
If you’re wondering what the title of Graff’s book is all about, it’s apparently a reference to Raven Rock Mountain, a secret bunker in Pennsylvania where Pentagon officials plan to relocate in the event of nuclear war. Graff says the “guest list” includes high-ranking government officials, cabinet leaders, congressional leaders, members of the Supreme Court, top aides, White House staff, NSA staff and those who run the bunker.
What about some of America’s greatest prized possessions? What will happen to those? Well, they also have plans to save the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence and the Liberty Bell if we ever get nuked.
As for the rest of the US, well, it was nice knowing ya.
Oh, and do you want to know how “American” all of this really is? There’s reportedly a Subway sandwich shop located in the Colorado bunker. Because, let’s face it, what the hell would one do without a five-dollar footlong when the world is ending?
