Most unflappable woman in the world? We’d have to say so.
A female Kurdish sniper was engaged in a shootout in Raqqa City in northern Syria when a bullet came dangerously close to her head, and instead of freaking out, she took it like a total badass.
The woman, from the Women’s Protection Unit, was filmed laughing and sticking her tongue out just seconds after an ISIS bullet missed her head by inches. The footage shows the woman peeking over a ledge inside a building, and shooting at a target. You can see the bullet spiral in her direction, coming close to her head before ricocheting off the wall.
While that would make most of us crap our pants, she didn’t appear scared or shaken. The sharpshooter responded to the scary moment by laughing to her colleagues and sticking her tongue out. She even kept on talking to her team like nothing ever happened!
The video was shared on Twitter by journalist Hemze Hamza with the caption, “Sniper battle inside Raqqa city. Thank God the ISIS terrorist missed…Kurdish women know no fear. Your average human being would be scared for life after being so close to death but she kept laughing.”
The Women’s Protection Unit, or YPG, is the armed unit of the Democratic Union Party in Syria. It is an all-female branch of the Kurdish People’s Protection Units. With around 7,000 members between the ages of 18-40, they fend off attacks by ISIS militants, the Syrian government as well as al Qaeda.
All that said, as we learned a few months ago, research has shown that only 10 to 20 percent of the time is laughter the result of a joke. The other 80 to 90 percent is instinctual—a way to fill the void when no other emotion or action seems valid.
Considering the circumstances, such a reaction would be totally understandable. Regardless, we are in awe.
