Tortuga was made famous most recently by the swaggering, swilling character Capt. Jack Sparrow as a nefarious nest of ne’er-do-wells in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies. While there is some truth to this – the area was rife with pirate activity in the 17th century – it’s since become somewhat more civilized. And, nowhere could be more civilized in the area than the Tortuga Bay luxury resort.
With famed fashion designer Oscar de la Renta (a Dominican native himself) at the helm of this 30-suite, 13-villa resort, Tortuga Bay is a fully private option for Caribbean getaways. It’s actually the privatized section of the larger, livelier Punta Cana Resort and Club. So, if you tire of your solitude on your personal white sand beach, or you want to try another restaurant than Tortuga Bay’s only option: Bamboo, you’re still close to the action.
They have three types of rooms, all with ocean views. There’s a suite, a one, and a two-bedroom villa at 1,125, 3,335, and close to 4,000 square feet respectively. Make your reservations here.
