The Scandal season finale airs tonight—and apparently no one in the cast is safe—so now seems as good a time as any to post this little video involving Scandal actor Scott Foley and my dog Mackie. Wait, what?

Okay, so quickly, here’s the backstory: We were told that Foley would be available for interviews to talk about the #iHeartMyDog campaign. (About the campaign: Basically, if you post a love letter to your dog on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram with the tag #iHeartMyDog from now until Aug 15, the makers of Heartgard Plus will donate $1 to Canine Companions of Independence, a non-profit that provides highly trained assistance dogs to people with disabilities, up to $150,000.) And—here’s the kicker—we were also told that Foley’s dog Frankie would be at the interviews.

So my editor and I got the bright idea that I should bring my own dog, Mackie, and have the two of us interview Foley and his dog. Only, as it turned out, Foley’s dog didn’t make it. Something about a five-hour flight from LA to New York being too difficult, blah blah blah. But anyway, Foley seemed pretty cool—he’s a fellow Midwesterner originally from St. Louis, Missouri, so how could he not be?—and it seemed like a good cause, so here’s the video (with a little peek behind the curtain at the beginning). Enjoy.

Also: Sorry if I overexplained this thing. I was trying to write quickly, and like Mark Twain said—and I’m paraphrasing here—anytime you don’t have much time to write something, you end up writing way too damn much and boring the hell out of your audience. But yeah, definitely use social media to send a quick love letter to your dog with the tag #iHeartMyDog. It’s an easy way to help someone in need get an awesome, loving, life-changing pet.
