First dates usually suck, but there’s a new trick to try out to make the stressful event a breeze. And for some of you, the tip may be something you’re used to doing anyway. Research performed on undergrads by psychology professor Gurit Birnbaum indicates porn consumption beforehand can make things go more smoothly later.

Birnbaum’s findings say that the date’s success comes from a “sexual priming” effect acquired through watching pornos. That priming essentially inspires both men and women to feel more gregarious and talkative.

The professor’s interesting research, according to a report in the U.K. Times, found that the priming effect can be seen in both digital interactions as well as real-world meetups. According to Birnbaum, the way porn activates “the sexual system” inspires “strategies that allow people to become closer to potential partners.” He also told the Times that checking out porn or even lower-key erotica “initiates a positive cycle of intimacy.”

So what does all of this really mean? Well, according to this research, people will be more likely to reveal personal things on a first date, and this can create warm feedback in which the other person wants to respond. Birnbaum said that the end result is “you get the impression that this person likes you, and you react by liking him or her more.” It can eventually lead to more serious flirting and, if all goes well, a bond between people who were previously strangers that leads to the best possible outcomes. (And by best possible outcomes we mean boning, but you already knew that.)

The way we see it, any time there’s a positive potential impact of an oft-criticized behavior, you might as well try it out, right? If you have a first date and some free time beforehand, just consider that quick click through Pornhub as some very personal research.
