This Halloween, your drinking may go a few different directions. You’ve got all those fall beers to consider, plus the fun candy cane drinks and ghoulish punches that are sure to appear. But let’s say you’re relaxing at home, maybe passing out some candy and generally just hiding from all the madness. In that case: Scotch. Scotch is that dear friend who’s always there for you, and it will be no different this time around. So sip away.
But if you’d like to doctor your Scotch and go the cocktail route, then take heed. Because this is perhaps the best-named cocktail of the year. Called “Here’s to You, Mr. Reaper,” this fine-looking drink is a stout, well-balanced option for your next nightcap. It comes from Usquaebach, which is hard to say, but no one’s grading you on your pronunciation skills here. Just know that it means “water of life,” and that sounds like a proper foil to the deathly themes of Halloween.
2 oz Usquaebach Reserve Blended Scotch Whisky
.5 oz Domaine de Canton Ginger Liqueur
.5 oz black tea -honey syrup (1 part raw honey, 1 part black tea)
1 dash aromatic bitters
How to Make It
Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass, and stir with ice. Strain into a rocks glass over one large ice cube. Garnish with lemon peel.
Why We Like It
For starters, it’s Scotch. Also, it’s damn handsome. And if you’re looking to class things up on Halloween, or just enjoy a Scotch cocktail any time of the year, this drink is far superior to the alternative. Which is not drinking Scotch.
