Check the calendar, guys. Valentine’s Day is just a week away, and you know all the ladies (single and spoken for) are going to waxed, teased and made up to the nines. Don’t they deserve the same top-level primping from your end? I’m sure you’ll remember to shower and shave, but here are five quick tips to make sure you look as fantastic as she does come February 14. Or look like you tried to, at least.

1. Plan ahead
Don’t get a haircut on Valentine’s Day, as pretty much everyone’s hair looks better after growing in for a few days. Get a haircut three to four days before the big day so your style doesn’t look “too done,” and looks more natural instead.

It’s important that you use some product to add shape and body to your look. Trust me, girls will notice the difference.

2. Try some product
No matter what type of hair you have, it’s important that you use some sort of product to add shape and body to your look. Trust me, girls will notice the difference. (For the skinny on what’s best for your hair, check out my advice on Men’s Hair Products, Demystified.)

3. Buzz your neck
Out of sight can’t be out of mind. Erase the hair on the back of their neck using a mirror and electric razor.

4. Smell good
Don’t forget to apply deodorant and a dash of body spray or cologne. But not too much.  (More advice on that here.)

5. Come prepared
Make sure you have some kind of gift, no matter how small, even of it’s a box of chocolates or flowers. The sentiment will go a long way.
