Mad, bad and dangerous—it’s what all the ladies like, apparently. According to new research from the University of Liverpool, women desire brooding men who are a little bit crazy and a lotta bit fertile.
While previous research suggests that the love of danger attracts women to the Don Drapers of the world, this study indicates that it’s actually a primitive desire to find mentally strong, confident and physically attractive male partners with whom to have some healthy babies. Who are these guys women are evidently seeking? Well, they’re psychos. When shown men’s faces, women deemed facial features that displayed the “Dark Triad” of personality traits in Machiavellianism, narcissism and psychopathy more attractive. Why? Perhaps because narcissism is associated with social success and psychological health benefits in men, which makes them ideal sperm donors. In fact, women who were attracted to the narcissistic and psychopathic facial features were more likely to pop out more kids than average.
In other words, brace yourself: The world is slowly being taken over by narcissistic psychopaths. (Insert your own presidential primary joke here.)
