Women in bikinis. Barbecues. Concerts. The long, hot days of summer mean fun in the sun. But they also mean guys need to take extra care of their skin so they don’t end up looking like Gary Busey. We asked Derek Hofmann, spa director at the Four Seasons Los Angeles at Beverly Hills for some tips on what every guy should do to keep his skin looking great this summer. Here’s the advice he gave us.
The things every man should do to protect his skin
First is sun protection. Sun exposure can cause painful and unsightly sunburns, deplete your skin of nutrients, dehydrate and contribute to sunspots, unwanted lines and sagging skin. Most people think of sun protection only when sitting poolside, or when heading to the beach, but it’s actually an important consideration at all times. Apply sunscreen every morning, reapply if you’re in the sun throughout the day and wash it off at night.
Many moisturizers have SPF in them. They will pull double-duty by hydrating your skin and providing a level of sun protection.
How do you treat sunburn?
Avoid the sun and keep skin hydrated. Moisturizers containing aloe, chamomile and cucumber will calm and cool the skin, help it heal and reduce peeling.
Why facials aren’t just for the ladies
Regardless of your routine at home, dead skin cells, dirt and oil get trapped in your pores and create blemishes and a dull complexion. Professional facials are the only way to truly deep-clean your skin; they use products you can’t use at home like amped-up facial peels. You go to the gym. You groom your hair. You’re particular about your wardrobe. This is your face we’re talking about!
Most facials are customizable to most skin types, so don’t be thrown if you don’t see a “Gentlemen’s Facial” option. Look for treatments specific to your skin type or condition—for example, oily skin has different concerns than dehydrated skin. If your face is in pretty good shape overall, a deep cleansing facial will do.
Skincare products every man should own
The basics are cleanser, exfoliant, moisturizer and sunscreen. For those looking to up the ante, look into purifying masks, serums to deliver powerful nutrients for the skin, eye cream for crow’s feet and puffiness and night creams to repair skin while you’re sleeping.
Some of my favorites are:
Arcona Triad Pads do three things in one. They cleanse, tone and hydrate. And because they’re in pad form, they’re great for your gym or overnight bag, at the office or in the car.
Cleansing Complex by Innovative Skincare Clinical. This a general cleanser good for most skin types, for day and night use.
GlamGlow Exfoliating Mud Mask. Can be used as a facial scrub, and also as a mask if left on the face. Rich in green tea antioxidants; it’s very tingly.
For day use a moisturizer with SPF. I like Kerstin Florian’s Multi-Vitamin SPF30 cream. It’s light, hydrating and good protection. For nighttime, select something a bit richer without SPF like Youth Complex for iS Clinical or Rescue Cream from Kerstin Florian.
There are so many great options on the market appealing to all sorts of sensibilities. Select something with good UVA/UVB coverage and aim for SPF 20+.
