The next step for digital cameras appears to be into a third dimension. Fujifilm has officially announced their new flagship camera, the FinePix 3D W1 camera which is capable of taking both pictures and video in 3D.
It uses two lenses that capture separate images simultaneously and then uses an advanced processor to combine the images precisely to create a stereoscopic 3D effect. It uses the same process to take 3D video, as well.
Until recently the processing power needed for this kind of image capture was fairly rare, fairly expensive, and certainly not in as compact and chic a package as the FinePix is. It’s going to be released in September of 2009, and the rumored price will be $600.
