Friend of Dinosaur Comic auteur, Ben Tippet, has been commissioned to write and present a scientific analysis of Superman’s super powers with the goal being trying to understand his seemingly superior ability in the framework of Newtonian physics.
The conclusion is half-baked, but wholly awesome. Rather than several, unique super powers working independently of one another (flight, heat vision, super strength, etc.), Tippet posits that Superman only has one super power from which the others are derived. He concudes:
It is our opinion that all of Superman's recognized powers can be unified if His power is the ability to manipulate, from atomic to kilometer length scales, the inertia of His own and any matter with which He is in contact.
Go over and read the paper for a much more in depth analysis of the equations and figures presented by Ben, and draw your own conclusions, or just email this to, like, 100 of your nerdiest friends.
