Straight out of San Francisco, Minus-8 draws its name from the GMT-8 time zone in which it resides. Pretty cool backstory, which isn’t surprising when you study one of their flagship pieces, the Layer 24 ($598, minus8watch.com). Available in four colorways (black, black-red, black-gold and grey), this watch delivers more than streamlined good looks. Right there on the face, you have not only the time, but also the weekday, date and month. Which can come in handy, because when a lady asks for the date, you’ll look a lot smoother twisting your wrist than you will fumbling in your pocket for your (oversized) smartphone. But what we really like is the aforementioned “back” story. See, when you flip this watch over, you can actually glimpse some of the Japanese automatic movement through a round rear window (note the image to the right, above).
