It’s funny because I was just thinking how my watch broke a few years ago and I never did replace it. I realized there was no need to have a watch because of all my other gadgets, especially my cell phone. Watch sales are down 10% in the low price watch which is by far the best selling segment of watches. The bling bling watches are up but only because they are a sign of wealth and half of the rappers wearing them can’t tell time anyway. Story here

Yep, I rarely wear a watch any more. Mostly b/c I’m usually at home and near a computer or a clock.
Re: your comment about rappers not being able to tell time. What survey did you take that informs you of that? Is that a hint of jealousy, envy or outright racism?

Yes Mike it is definitely a hint of jealousy and envy but don’t ever call me a racist. They are businessmen just like I am and most of their personality is all an act. I was just having fun that image. I appreciate you calling me a racist but you’re barking up the wrong tree. I make fun of anyone being an idiot including myself at times. By the way, you think most rappers portray an image black America is proud of? I think Morgan Freeman and Bill Cosby would agree with me.
PS I still enjoy your blog TraderMike

Shane,
I’m glad that you don’t consider yourself racist. As for me calling you a racist, show me where I did that. All I did was ask you a question based on your statement. The first thing that came to my mind after reading that was “I wonder if he’d write the same thing about group X if group X wore ‘bling bling watches’ ” Insert ‘extreme sports athletes’ or ‘country/western singers’ or ‘top Hollywood actors’ for group X.
Do I think most rappers portray an image Black America is proud of? I’d hate to speak for all of us (Black Americans) since we have such diverse tastes & opinions so I’ll just answer for myself. There is a certain segment of rappers that I think portrays a respectable image and another segment that portrays a very negative image. Unfortunately the latter segment gets all the media coverage and the former gets almost none. (Why is that?)

I’ll end this and thank you for your comments. In all races there are good and bad people. Good rap is no different that poetry. Call it whatever you want and put it to whatever music you want, it was known as poetry until recently. We should have the freedom to write whatever we want and play whatever we want on the radio. I choose to think the rap as compared to other popular music lends itself to demeaning women, making youth value jewelry more than education, and a complete destruction of the English language. Yes this is a complete generalization but turn on MTV for one day and the reasearch is done. There are plenty of rappers that are fine role models. Kanye, Common, even Lil’ Wayne. Yeah even lil weesy has given up the fine cars and jewelry for more adult investments. I envy the money but not the lifestyle. Now back to the markets. Thanks Mike for the comments
