tesla model s brooklyn new york

Forget the electric part. The self-driving and 0-60 speed of the Model S will blow your mind.

On a recent bike ride through Brooklyn’s Red Hook neighborhood, a friend and I just happened upon a Tesla location. Had no idea it was there. We popped in to take a look around and the next thing we knew, we’d signed up for test drives.

At the time I didn’t really have strong feelings about Elon Musk’s lofty automotive ambitions. But that all changed when I got behind the wheel of a Model S the following weekend. Now, I could ramble on about this vehicle’s amazing features, but most of them, you really have to see to believe. Thankfully my buddy Pete was in the backseat with a smartphone during my test drive, shooting footage of the Model S in action—and capturing two aspects that really make the car stand out.

The first thing that wowed us was the self-driving feature. Simply pull back on a steering wheel stalk and the car takes over, using a dozen cameras to assess the traffic and control your steering and speed. It’s pretty wild, and it left me believing that we really will be telling our grandkids about the days when we used to have to drive our own cars.

The second thing that left us breathless was the acceleration. Toward the end of the drive, we pulled onto a quiet little stretch of road and experienced first hand what zero to 60 in 2.8 seconds feels like. There wasn’t much real estate to work with, so we just kissed that second digit before I had to brake to spare the life of an innocent jogger. But damn, that car can move. This may seem an odd analogy, but for a few moments afterward, I felt like my balls were halfway up my torso. And it was exhilarating.

Anyway, enjoy these brief videos, then sign up for a test drive yourself. We’re pretty sure it’ll have you rethinking how most of us currently get from point A to point B.
