Look, we know that despite Nicole Scherzinger, The X-Factor isn’t for everyone. But if you’re looking to contribute something to the conversation the next time your girlfriend or mom starts rambling about it, here’s what you need to know.

Simon Cowell’s bold experiment is down to three contestants for the five-million-dollar prize, the largest ever given away on a television show. They are West Indian beauty Melanie Amaro, geeky yet soulful rocker Josh Krajcik, and underdog “Young Homie” lyricist Chris Rene.

And regardless of how you feel about it, the show’s definitely prone to causing dream-chasing goosebumps. So as it heads toward the dramatic finale (Wednesday and Thursday, 8/7c, FOX), we asked the final three what songs we should drop on an “inspirational” playlist. Sneak ’em on to your girl’s iPod and she’ll probably melt.

Amaro: “ ‘The World’s Greatest’ by R. Kelly. This song really had a huge impact on me. It pushed me to a place where I could show myself 100 percent. I loved singing it on the show.”

Krajcik: “There are so many beautiful love songs. I got a chance to sing ‘Hallelujah’ by Leonard Cohen during one of the live shows. For me, that song is so desperately achingly beautiful. It completely inspires me.”

Rene: “In thinking of all the songs I did, I really loved Bob Marley’s ‘No Woman, No Cry.’ This is a very special song for me.”
